Intelligent Materials Enabling Innovative Manufacturing and Applications

Since 2012, MRS TV has already produced videos for the promotion of the MSE department in the World-famous High-Level University, including MIT, Stanford, Osaka University, Nanyang Technological University, and City University of Hong Kong. MSE department at the NCTU is the first one in Taiwan to be invited by MRS TV for creating "Thought Leadership" broadcast that is a five-minute film used to highlight its programs, case studies, best practices, and features in the field. Intelligent materials are a class of materials that can be designed and fabricated with specifically controlled microstructure, thus displaying nontraditional properties.

For examples, here in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) of the National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) we design and develop intelligent materials in many areas, such as GaAs-based semiconductors for high-speed and high-frequency electronic devices, small molecules and polymers for solar cells, nano-twinned Cu thin films for low resistance interconnects, intelligent biomimetic nano-sized bioglass powders for implants of human body parts, etc.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at NCTU was founded in 1989; it is a relatively young but vibrant department. Over the years, it has grown in all aspects and now has about 30 faculty members, over 200 undergraduate students and nearly 300 postgraduate students (>10% are international students). MSE is constantly ranked among the top 100 in all the world university ranking polls. The R/D output of MSE is realized by its publications in world-renowned journals such as Science, Nature, Nature Materials, Advanced Materials, Nano Letters, etc. with high citation indices. It is also realized by knowledge and technology transfer via patents and collaboration with industries.

Taiwan is well recognized for her outstanding ability on the design and manufacturing of electronic devices. Here at NCTU we strive for education and research excellence, especially on intelligent materials with special focus on electronic materials. We are well equipped with the most advanced device fabrication labs for Si and compound semiconductor devices, as well as state-of-the-art facilities for materials and device characterization and analysis.

Taiwan’s Silicon Valley, i.e. Hsinchu Science Park, is located just next door to NCTU campus. There are nearly 500 high-tech companies in the Science Park producing more than US$350 billion revenue a year. Companies in the Science Park provide MSE faculty member with collaborative opportunities, more importantly they also provide internships and employment opportunities to our students.

With the invention and applications of intelligent materials, we are hoping to provide solutions to some of the problems that are challenging the industries and the environment we live in, such as nano-device fabrication, sustainable energy, human health and so on, with the expectation of making impact on the well-being of mankind.
